As a rule of thumb, always use the sewing needle that is made for sewing leather products (generally needle number 14 and higher is for leather)

Sewing any fabric on regular or commercial sewing machine is very easy, since most of the available sewing machines are automatic and very little user intervention is needed to adjust the machine setting for a particular fabric except changing the sewing needle. If we talk about sewing leather fabric then you must be aware of the following few things if your are sewing using regular sewing machine. If you plan to sew using sewing machine for leather or leather sewing machine then it will be as simple as sewing a normal fabric using regular sewing machine.

Here we will talk about how to sew leather using regular sewing machine. As a rule of thumb, always use the sewing needle that is made for sewing leather products (generally needle number 14 and higher is for leather). After you have changed the sewing needle then comes the next step to sew and i.e. the width between the stitches. For leather adjust the stitching width somewhere between 4 to 4 1/2 stitches, which is perfect for leather products. Make sure you never reduce this width below 3, else it may case damage to your fabric and also never increase the width more than 5. If width more than 5 the quality of stitching will not be of good quality.

Always adjust the thread tension to optimal. Just make sue that as the width of the fabric increases the tension of the thread should be decreased else the thread will keep on breaking. And while sewing never use stapler or pins to hold the pieces of leather together that you are going to sew. This may create a permanent spots on the leather. To avoid these holes you can make use of the binder clips or both side tape to hold the pieces together until you sew them. This makes the sewing process easy.
